"I cannot deny that our nation is a great nation. But our freedom, our unity...has been the source of our greatness. These secessionists are directly responsible for destroying one of America's most treasured monuments. They have struck at the very heart of everything we love, and they believe it shall demoralize us. I will not stand by and let this threat stand. Not for you, my fellow Americans, and certainly not for our land of most splendid opportunity."
— An excerpt from the Portland Address made by US President Avery J. Hill.

The Second American Civil War, also known as the War for the Constitution by Freedoms First and as the North American War by non-US nations, was a major conflict between a US-led coalition and an alliance of secessionist US states led by the Freedoms First paramilitary organization that was fought between 1 November 2096 CE and 15 June 2099 CE, and is often considered a theater of the larger Third World War. The late 21st Century CE saw a multitude of conflicts explode across the world as nation-states collapsed or warred with their neighbours: historically, these conflicts and their aftermaths ultimately led to them being collectively categorized as a "Third World War", as there was significant spillover from many of them. These conflicts stemmed from the COVID-19 pandemic that lasted from 1 December 2019 CE to 13 April 2023 CE, and was ultimately the cause of the subsequent Second Pacific War that caused the collapse of the People's Republic of China. The toll on the world economy of the pandemic and the war combined led to years of strife and war, and by the late 21st century, the majority of the world's nations had been plunged into elongated, perpetual conflict.

In 2085 CE, the United States, still the dominant superpower on Earth at the time, led a coalition of allied nations against the belligerent North Korea when they invaded their South Korean neighbour to take advantage of the nation's weakened state following its war with the Chinese remnant state of Shenyang. The US coalition was victorious and brought the war to a close in 2086 CE, but the loss of an aircraft carrier and significant South Korean losses only weakened US foreign policy, which had been on the decline since the election of President Donald J. Trump in 2016 CE. President Alicia Chapman was narrowly defeated in the presidential election of 2088 CE by the Democrat frontrunner Avery J. Hill, who was inaugurated the following year. Avery J. Hill proposed many new policies that alienated Republican-leaning citizens, most notably his proposed idea for a unification of the North American continent into a single nation. Prime Minister Ashton Brant of Canada was a staunch ally of Avery J. Hill, and while initially hesitant of Canadian opposition, popular support proved to be more open to the idea than initially believed. Mexican president Rubén Juderías proved less amenable, believing that Mexico would simply be another state of the US, citing previous conflicts with America and their annexation of California, New Mexico and Texas. The dozens of smaller nations in North America expressed mixed opinions of the concept, with some supporting it, others concerned by it, and others adamantly opposed to it. However, no opposition proved as stubborn and vehement as the Freedoms First organization, founded in 2052 CE during the Rasaun Dean protests. The organization, whose political platform focused on Republican policies such as gun ownership rights, religion, anti-abortion, opposition to affirmative action, illegal immigration, and so forth, opposed any idea that involved the dissolution of the United States and what they believed to treason against the Constitution. Freedoms First took this a step further and is openly anti-government, believing entirely in their constitutional right to bear arms. The Freedoms First organization was heavily armed and well-equipped as far as paramilitaries went, with members who either actively served in the US military or had served. Their membership was strongest in pro-Republican states, and commanded a large amount of political power, making them the single most powerful paramilitary group active in the United States by 2070 CE.

By 2091 CE, Avery J. Hill's movement to unite North America was gaining traction, with Hill and Prime Minister Brant frequenting each other's nations as discussions ramped up. In late November of that year, Hill visited Mexico to further broach the topic with President Rubén Juderías, knowing that with both Mexico and Canada supporting the idea, most of North America would be onboard, and from there the other nations could be gradually convinced. Despite Juderías' reputation for being a stern and uncompromising leader, his many meetings with Hill eventually led to an agreement between the two nations, and in subsequent visits the next year, it became clear that Juderías would support unification, with Hill offering reassurances that Mexico would be given parity with its American and Canadian neighbours in the new government. By 2093 CE, what had seemed impossible was beginning to become reality, and talks had begun between Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemela, Belize, Honduras and other Central American nations. Around this time, the US pulled out of the Sumatran War, leaving the British to lead the UN forces against the United Islamic State. Hill argued to the United Nations that this was due to the nation's politically unstable position and that it could no longer afford to wage war in numerous theaters for so long. Behind the scenes, this was also because Hill wanted to focus more on solidifying the ties between the US' neighbours, and that dragging them into a war would only serve to alienate those he wanted to unite with. As such, by the end of the year, the amount of conflicts the US was actively involved with had been cut down by half, largely replaced by pure logistical and economic support.

But Hill's policies and ideals of unification were greatly at odds with the beliefs of groups like Freedoms First, who staunchly believed in the United States Constitution and believed that Hill's attempts to dissolve the US and replace it within a unified North American superstate violated what the Constitution stood for and it was tantamount to treason. The political arm of the Freedoms First group used its power to lobby heavily against the Hill administration, utilizing the media to launch smear campaigns and personal attacks: many states dominated by the Republicans, such as Alabama, Nebraska, Utah, Wyoming and Texas, also openly supported Freedoms First and opposed President Hill. In 2092 CE, these states supported the Republican presidential candidate Raul Gamble when he ran against Hill in the election: while Gamble's ties and membership with Freedoms First were ousted by the media, Gamble ended up surviving into the secondaries, and became the Republican frontrunner. Despite this, Hill won in a landslide victory, securing his second term. While Freedoms First criticized the election as being rigged by the Democrats, these concerns were ignored and Hill continued well into his second term in spite of this. This only led to further aggression from Freedoms First, who began spreading their claims of election rigging throughout the country, and these calls eventually led to demands for a popular uprising. Tensions continued to mount well into Hill's second term as president, with Freedoms First continuing to use their political power to oppose Hill's unification campaign, inciting those who agreed with them to resist. Protests fell into riots, and the National Guard had to be deployed to Albuquerque when a particular riot overwhelmed the local law enforcement. Their opposition extended beyond the nation's own borders, with members of their military arm crossing the northern and southern borders into Canada and Mexico respectively, using their resources to stir up trouble within those countries as well. Despite their best efforts however, the talks were only stalled, and once these riots had settled down, unification talks continued. As talks continued, Freedoms First opposition only increased, and eventually, threats of secession began to be whispered. One day, a Confederate version of the Texan flag was found flying over the government building and quickly reported on, with Freedoms First taking responsibility. These threats turned into actual political action, and eventually secession became a very real threat in the US for the first time since the First American Civil War. The pieces were in place, and tensions reached their boiling point in early 2096 CE where threats of secession were at their highest. Hill ignored the threats, believing that Freedoms First was only bluffing and that they wouldn't risk sparking a civil war while a larger world war raged elsewhere on the planet.

Late 2096 CE saw Hill's presidency nearing it's end, with Freedoms First hoping to wait out the remainder of Hill's presidency and then pushing for Gamble to assume the presidency in the following election. However, the Democrat candidate Matthias Koch openly supported Hill's unification strategy, and swore to see it completed. This proved to be the last straw for Freedoms First, who weren't willing to risk the possibility of Koch's victory in the election: due to Hill's soaring popularity, this proved to be a near inevitability. Deciding that war against the Hill administration was the only option, Freedoms First chose to strike pre-emptively and spent the better half of 2096 CE planning their attack strategy. In July, Hill announced plans for a meeting in New York City that would took place on the 1st of November, with members of the US, Canadian, Mexican and other interested North American governments attending, to begin discussions for long-term unification. It was here that Freedoms First reached a decision on their plan of attack, and spent the next couple months making preparations. On 1 November, the discussions took place as planned, but were interrupted as they witnessed a massive explosion across the bay. The explosion was Freedoms First detonating explosives within the Statue of Liberty, destroying the statue in a powerful display of their power and to make a statement against Hill's administration. The following day, Freedoms First formally declared war against the United States, and several states that supported Freedoms First subsequently announced their secession and declared themselves in support of the organization. As such, the Liberty Destruction Day, as it would later be called, is considered the outbreak of the Second American Civil War.

The conflict lasted just over two and a half years, with fighting across the United States and Canada, even reaching as far as the Central American interior. Despite scoring numerous victories in the early months of the war, it was clear Freedoms First had underestimated the resolve of President Hill and his allies, and despite 2096 being the year Hill's presidency was meant to end, he continued his presidency well into 2099 CE, having been granted an extension of his term due to war-time. Their efforts to divide and alienate America's allies also proved futile, as was proven when US forces aided the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division in breaking the Siege of Ottawa. FREDS attempts to fund the cartels in Mexico to instigate a civil war within Mexican borders failed when the cartels instead raided and destroyed numerous FREDS outposts along the American border. FREDS in Texas and New Mexico would reconsolidate their forces and later counterattack, capturing the cities of Ciudad Juárez and Saltillo, with a plan to make a push for Mexico City itself. However, in an unexpected move, the Mexican army linked up with the Honduran and Salvadoran armies and launched a massive offensive into the captured states of Coahuila and Chihuahua, launching relentless air strikes against the captured cities and using their navy to cut off sea-based resupply: this effort was later bolstered by the US Navy. Mexican forces continued their push until FREDS had been completely kicked out of the US, shoring up its border and fortifying it against any further FREDS offensives while remaining cartel assets were pacified and disbanded back into the countryside. During the conflict, there was only one major naval engagement at the Battle of the Sargasso Sea, which was part of the larger Battle of Norfolk, a FREDS assault on the US' largest naval base. Following their defeat at the Sargasso Sea, FREDS naval capabilities were permanently crippled, and once the Canadian and US navies commenced joint operations, they were able to effectively blockade and cut off all sea-bound trade to the secessionist states.

The FREDS were able to successfully invade and overthrow the state governments of Georgia and Tennessee from their bases in Alabama. While Tennessee shortly thereafter rose up in rebellion against FREDS and kicked them out with the help of US forces, FREDS had a large amount of popular support in Georgia, and thus remained under firm FREDS control. This would be counteracted when US and Canadian intelligence waged a joint propaganda war that defaced FREDS in their home state of Alabama, allowing for a nearly bloodless invasion. As the war neared its close, FREDS was on the verge of total defeat: they maintained meagre holdouts in Canada, and only one state remained in their possession by the war's end, which was Georgia: the rest had either surrendered, been retaken or (in Texas' case) had switched sides. In the final stages of the war, a joint US-Canadian army invaded Georgia, quickly recapturing most of the state, including the capital city of Atlanta. The FREDS made a final stand at the city of Lawrenceville, where they fought to the last man, not one of them surrendering. Following the Battle of Lawrenceville and the capitulation of Georgia, FREDS had been completely destroyed as an organization and the war was over.

Despite Freedoms First's attempt to destroy the unification process of North America, they had in actuality only strengthened it. FREDS' actions had caused large swaths of North America to fall in behind the United States, who demonstrated through their war on FREDS that they were truly dedicated to unification. While most of the smaller North American nations, most notable of them being Cuba, had chosen to remain neutral in the conflict, they too realized that unification was the best thing for the continent. Finally, on the 24th of August 2099 CE in Mexico City, every North American nation signed and ratified the Pact for the Unification of the Americas, dissolving thier own nations to create the single United North American States in their place, leading to the merging of their militaries, economies, governments and citizenry. Following this landslide victory, President Hill voluntarily stepped down from his now defunct position as POTUS, and the first President of North America would be elected to power within days of establishing the superstate, with Canadian parliamentarian Dominic Barber winning the election. The UNAS wouldn't enjoy peace for long however, and would, within half a month, be dragged into its first conflict as UNAS troops were deployed to the then-newly developing Australian Civil War and Great Asian War.

The anniversary of the end of the war is commerorated each year on the 15th of June with the Unity Day holiday. The holiday celebrates both the end of the war and the birth of the United North American States in its wake, although the date chosen for the celebration is the date the war ended, instead of the date the UNAS was formed (24th of August): this was deliberate, as the end of the war is often considered the true establishment of a United America, whereas the 24th of August formalized the union in writing. In perhaps a cruel twist of fate and perhaps as a deliberate move to further splinter the country, the UNAS collapsed on the same date in 2186 CE, 87 years after the country's formation.
